What will happen if!!?

what will happen if i write a 1080p video on a dvd and play it on my dvd player that is connected to my samsung pdp 43inch tv that only plays 720p?? will it play the movie in 720p or it will show an error...can i play 1080p via dvd or a blu ray is required...i wana experiment with a ready mind so tell me asap
