How long does it take to get a Driver's License?

I currently live in California, I'm 17 at the moment. I don't want to wait till I'm 17 1/2 to get my License but I know it's the best choice. But I'm wondering, if I started my Driver's Ed now, will I be able to get my License before December because that's when I turn 17 1/2?
