Does a music student have to take gen ed courses?

If I went to a music school, do I have to take gen ed. courses first and then start the music school or do music schools not require previous gen ed courses? If they do, would it be smart to go to a community college for the gen ed and then after graduating from community, start undergraduate at the music school?
